Kotak Mahindra Bank has received regulatory clearance from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to acquire the retail banking, private banking, and wealth management businesses of Deutsche Bank Aktiengesellschaft in India, paving the way for a major consolidation in the domestic financial services sector. The approved transaction envisages the complete acquisition of Deutsche Bank’s customer-facing business operations conducted through its Indian branch network as a going concern on a slump sale basis. Beyond the direct asset takeover, the deal incorporates strategic referral arrangements between affiliates of both banking groups, under which clients from Deutsche Investments India Private Limited’s investment advisory and portfolio management divisions will be seamlessly referred to relevant wholly-owned subsidiaries of Kotak Mahindra Bank. This regulatory clearance follows the definitive agreement entered into by both banking institutions in June, marking a significant milestone in transferring a highly lucrative asset portfolio. The target operations encompass approximately ₹29,000 crore (around 2.7 billion euros) in loan books, ₹16,000 crore (about 1.5 billion euros) in total deposits, and ₹10,500 crore (roughly 1 billion euros) in assets under management (AUM). Established in 1985, the Kotak Mahindra Group stands as one of India’s premier integrated financial services conglomerates, reporting impressive total assets of ₹10,03,353 crore as of March 31, 2026. The acquisition substantially reinforces Kotak’s domestic retail presence, affluent customer network, and wealth management capabilities by integrating the established client base of Germany’s flagship lender, which maintains a powerful international presence across Europe, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region. As the market regulator responsible for monitoring fair competition and preventing anti-competitive business practices, the CCI evaluated the proposed combination to ensure market equilibrium before granting formal approval for the large-scale transaction. By absorbing Deutsche Bank’s premier retail and wealth franchise, Kotak Mahindra Bank further solidifies its market position, expanding its domestic market share, strengthening its high-net-worth portfolio, and driving long-term operational synergies within India’s rapidly evolving banking landscape.
